Role-playing game (disingkat RPG) merupakan game dimana pemain berperan sebagai sesosok karakter dalam sebuah setting cerita. Namun, yang cenderung menonjol dalam game RPG adalah kebebasan pemain dalam mengelola dan mengembangkan karakternya sendiri. Bahkan tidak sedikit juga game RPG dimana pemain dapat membuat karakternya sendiri ketimbang memainkan karakter yang disediakan oleh game.
Walau memang banyak game non-RPG lainnya yang memiliki fitur pengelolaan karakter, leveling, experience dan sebagainya, biasanya tetap dikategorikan sebagai game RPG atau memiliki subgenre RPG.
